Purpose: The purpose of the study is to identify issues and status related to Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) in Korea, and to propose the concept of operation of the Forward Resuscitation Surgical Team (FRST) customized to Korea Army as a unit to replace MASH.
Methods: We collected and analyzed the policy reports and studies published within the domestic and international military manuals. We analyzed the problems and improvement needs of the MASH and reviewed the cases of foreign operation in connection with the medical support with mobility.
Results: We identified that it was impossible for the Republic of Korea MASH to provide close support to mass casualties occurred in the early stages of the war. Korean Forward Resuscitation Surgical Team (K-FRST), the replacement to MASH, consists of 20 personnel and focuses on Damage Control Resuscitation. K-FRST, originally affiliated to Army Corps, is placed under trauma-center during peacetime to maintain proficiency. In wartime, however, it directly supports combat divisions. Other considerations for personnel, facilities and equipment were presented.
Conclusion: This study has policy implications in presenting various factors that should be considered in realizing K-FRST.
